"Fish Cheeks" and "Superman and Me" Analysis

“Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan

The first essay I read was about a young girl that had a crush on a young American boy whose family would be celebrating Christmas together.  Amy’s family would be hosting Christmas dinner, which concerned Amy due to her family’s tradition being different from the American tradition.  Amy’s mother pointed forth the importance of your culture, which Amy came to realize in later years.  Tans intentions in this article was to point out the importance of embracing your culture.

“Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie

This article was about a young boy that lived on an Indian reservation in eastern Washington.  He had a strong love for books and taught himself to read looking through his father’s books laying around there home.  They talked about the strong opinion and stereotype upon the natives that they were not smart or intelligent which made him want to prove them wrong, and then later on became a writer.

My essay will be on the “Superman and Me” because I am able to relate to this article more.

Narrative Writing Practice: Favoite Place

Cool brisk air, evergreens, vegetation surrounding, peaks of rock reaching skyward toward the heavens from eons ago violent collisions, now sitting so dormant and peaceful, with that feeling in the back of ones mind at any moment it could come back to life. Covered in rivers of ice. Hiking is something we love to do year round. the uneven jagged surface feeling the burn in your legs and lungs as you climb higher and higher, and then the pounding of your joint as you try not to topple over as you go down. The thrill, beauty, struggle yet rewarding adventure it can be. Winding in and out of the tree tops, over hills, through rivers, over bridges, under waterfalls is what we love to experience. The scenery can be pictured from various places in Washington but is not as beautiful as in person. It brings such piece to just go, sort your thoughts, nothing but nature noise surrounding. I feel at piece, adventurous, strong, inferior, renewed, GREAT. In tough times, rain or shine, this is my go to even if just for a day, weekend, week.

"Why we lie" By Dan Ariely

1)      Summary

In this article it explains through many test that most if not all people lie every single day. Big lie or small lie, the dishonesty is in our society every day. There are several things that factor into the lying, may it be being surrounded by cheaters, or the reward given, or the struggle to get as much out of something as possible? When people are reminded of moral messages or the value in being honest, they are found to be less likely to cheat. Though we may not be able to stop the big cheaters from cheating every day, we can discourage the ones who tell the small lies. (Ariely 440-446)

2)      Paragraph #10

In paragraph ten It is letting us know that we already know that people cheat, but we need to find out why we cheat? What encourages the dishonest behavior? (pg.442)

3)      Quote

My favorite quote in this article would have to be “The locksmith told him that locks are on doors only to keep the honest people honest.” (Ariely 440)
This is my favorite quote from the book because its gives the idea that everyone is capable of lying. When given a reminder, such as the locked door, or a moral phrase we tend to think twice about our actions. We tend to choose the honest and moral route or action.

ABOUT ME

Hello my fellow classmates,
My name is Shelbee Wilhite, 25 years old and a second year college student, my first year and quarter attending Peninsula College. In 2010 I did my medical assistant nursing school through Everest College and in 2012 I completed a year of classes at Olympic College of prerequisites working toward the RN program. I hope to complete the second half of my prerequisite classes this year and apply for the nursing program at Peninsula.
A little about my home life, we live in Silverdale and I grew up in Seabeck. I have boyfriend of 8 years who works at Bangor, 2 step children 7 & 9 Years old both boys, and a new baby boy who just turned a year old. We have 3 dogs, two boxers and a pit bull lab. I am a stay at home mom and a full time student and also care for my niece and nephew during the day in my home. In the past I have worked as a medical assistant, receptionist and a Pre K and Kindergarten teacher at a Montessori school in Silverdale.
My writing strengths is a tough one, I have not taken a writing/English class in many years. It definitely is one of my better subjects because I really enjoy English unlike math I really struggle in mathematics. One of the reasons I took this course is to get a refresher course of English to better complete further courses.
I am new to the blogging world but here is the link to my blog.http://srwilhite.blogspot.com/ (Links to an external site.)
I'm looking forward to a great quarter with my fellow classmates at Peninsula college.
