"Fish Cheeks" and "Superman and Me" Analysis

“Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan

The first essay I read was about a young girl that had a crush on a young American boy whose family would be celebrating Christmas together.  Amy’s family would be hosting Christmas dinner, which concerned Amy due to her family’s tradition being different from the American tradition.  Amy’s mother pointed forth the importance of your culture, which Amy came to realize in later years.  Tans intentions in this article was to point out the importance of embracing your culture.

“Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie

This article was about a young boy that lived on an Indian reservation in eastern Washington.  He had a strong love for books and taught himself to read looking through his father’s books laying around there home.  They talked about the strong opinion and stereotype upon the natives that they were not smart or intelligent which made him want to prove them wrong, and then later on became a writer.

My essay will be on the “Superman and Me” because I am able to relate to this article more.

  1. I think you did a good job summarizing the essays. The only critique I have is that in your second paragraph you did not include what the author's purpose was. Good luck on your essay!

  2. Excellent points in your choice, Shelbee. I think Alexie now looks at all those people that put him down and said, "Look at me now!" He's pretty renowned and amazing.

  3. Good job in the summaries of the two essays, I found it difficult to decide between the two essays and ended up choosing the other essay.
